ENROLLMENT AND PARTICIPATION IN ACTIVITIES
OF STUDENTS FROM NON-ACCREDITED SCHOOLS

The Spearfish School District supports and desires to cooperate with parents who choose to home school their children or enroll them in other non-accredited educational programs.  It is the intent of the District to develop and maintain a cooperative relationship with all parents of the students residing in the school district.

Dual enrollment is offered as an option for students attending non-accredited schools, which includes home school students.  An "open door" policy allows students to elect to participate in any curricular or co-curricular program that is part of the public school.

The following guidelines shall apply for enrollment:

a)   Registration for the classes or other educational experiences needs to occur at the same time as normal enrollment.

b)   Students will be placed with other children of similar chronological age.

            c)   Placement will be on proficiency, which may be established by one or more tests.

            d)   Transportation shall not be provided by the District.

            e)   Supervision before and after the class or activity shall not be the responsibility of the District.

            f)   The school board shall adopt other rules and/or administrative regulations as necessary to implement the policy.

The Spearfish School District welcomes the participation of students from non-accredited schools in its activities programs under the following conditions:

  1. The student must be enrolled in the Spearfish school system for the greater of two class periods/two hours/two classes per day.

  1. The student must meet the eligibility requirements as outlined by the South Dakota High School Activities Association (Part IV, Section 2 – Participation of Alternative Instruction Students) by fulfilling the following conditions:
