Spearfish High School is accredited by the South Dakota Department
of Education and the North Central Accreditation Association. It
is a public high school, grades 9 - 12, with an enrollment of approximately
725 students. Sixty percent of our graduates will go on to attend
a two-year or four-year college.
Spearfish, South Dakota is a rural community of nearly 10,000 located
in western South Dakota. The primary sources of employment are the
mining and timber industries as well as the local university.
Spearfish High School offers a diverse, comprehensive curriculum. Some
advanced placement classes are
offered the junior and senior year. Resource help is available
for those students who qualify for assistance.
Students in grades 9, 10 & 11 are required to take a minimum of
7 credits each year. Seniors are required to take a minimum of 6
credits each year. SHS operates on an alternating day block schedule;
classes are 90 minutes in length.
Grade reports are given every nine weeks. Credit is awarded on
a semester basis. No credit is given for work of less than a semester's
duration. All courses are given equal weight in computing the GPA.
GPA and Class Rank are cumulative from the freshman year. Grades
are computed using the scale listed below.
A = 4.000 96-100 C = 2.000 76-78
A- = 3.667 92-95 C- = 1.667 73-75
B+ = 3.333 89-91 D+ = 1.333 69-72
B = 3.000 86-88 D = 1.000 65-68
B- = 2.667 83-85 D- = 0.667 60-64
C+ = 2.333 79-82 F = 0.000 59 and Below
